In this portrait, I subvert the Rockwellian vision of the ideal scout—young, handsome, white.

Like the quick shelters of pioneers across a Manifest West, my A-frame survived torrential rains at the edge of Appalachia in Georgia. During my first Scout-camp in 2015, over the radio I heard then-President Obama proclaim the legalization of gay marriage as "justice that arrives like a thunderbolt.”

Police departments even set up covert surveillance stations within public restrooms to gather evidence against “sexual deviants.” Violence enacted on men seeking connection.

From an indigenous Mayan language in southwestern Guatemala, Q'uux is K'iche for Musgo is Spanish for Moss. “Spanish Moss”—a nod to the long beards of the conquistadors that crawled onto the swamps—has borne witness to slaughter and freedom, perched atop hundred-year-old oaks. Stories rattle as the Gulf winds blow.
